The Institute of Medicine today awarded the 2009 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health to David Mechanic, University Professor and René Dubos Professor of Behavioral Sciences; and director, Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. The Sarnat Prize, consisting of a medal and $20,000, was presented to Mechanic at IOM's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

"Through his prolific research, teaching, and writings, David Mechanic has helped to define and build the field of medical sociology," said Harvey V. Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine. "Dr. Mechanic has greatly influenced thinking in areas ranging from mental health to health policy, providing a sociological perspective that has complemented and enriched medical and psychological approaches to these subjects. In addition, he has been an exemplary professional colleague, teacher, and mentor."

The Sarnat Prize was presented to Mechanic in recognition of his decades of effort to increase scientific knowledge about the causes and factors shaping mental health and to improve mental health care services. His books on medical sociology, mental health, and social policy laid a foundation for looking at mental illness through a sociological lens. His early research in social psychology focused on how patients' behavior can affect their ability to obtain care, pioneering a line of research that has extended to other areas of medicine where behaviors such as medication compliance and smoking cessation affect the success of treatment. His work on factors that contribute to high rates of unmet treatment needs has been influential in guiding policy planners in improving mental health care and has been especially important in the treatment of persistent and severe mental disorders.

With his skills in translating research into effective policy recommendations, Mechanic has been a valued adviser to several state, federal, and private mental health system developers. He has also been an influential mentor to many researchers and clinicians through the National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored training programs in mental health services that he has led for years at Rutgers University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and through his direction of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Awards Program in Health Policy Research.

Mechanic received his undergraduate degree from City College of New York and his Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University. He has earned many professional honors, including his election as one of the first nonmedical members of the Institute of Medicine in 1971. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous awards including the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology, its Distinguished Medical Sociologist Award, and its Lifetime Contributions Award in Mental Health; the Health Services Research Prize from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and the Baxter Allegiance Foundation; the Distinguished Investigator Award from AcademyHealth; the first Carl Taube Award for Distinguished Contributions to Mental Health Services Research and the Rema Lapouse Award for Scientific Contributions to the Epidemiology and Control of Mental Illness from the American Public Health Association; and the Benjamin Rush Award from the American Psychiatric Association. He also was selected for the first annual Riley Award and Lecture by the National Institutes of Health. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.

Since 1992, the Institute of Medicine has presented the Sarnat Prize to individuals, groups, or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in improving mental health. The prize recognizes -- without regard for professional discipline or nationality -- achievements in basic science, clinical application, and public policy that lead to progress in the understanding, etiology, prevention, treatment, or cure of mental disorders, or to the promotion of mental health. New Wave Of Talking Therapy Sites For World Mental Health Day, UK

More than 100,000 people will benefit from a new wave of talking therapy services going live across the country from today, World Mental Health Day, Care Services Minister Phil Hope has announced.

The 52 new sites will help people with depression and anxiety disorders access NICE approved treatments including cognitive behavioural therapies, counselling and guided self-help.

The 52 new sites going live between World Mental Health Day and March 2010 join 35 sites launched in 2008 and a further 28 that went live earlier this year. This is part of £103 million being spent by the Department of Health on making a total of 115 services available by March next year.

Care Services Minister Phil Hope said:

"From World Mental Health Day, 52 new talking therapy services will go live, helping thousands more people recover from debilitating anxiety disorders.

"The talking therapy services that are already up and running have been very successful, with 73,000 people entering treatment and 1,500 more therapists being employed under the scheme. I look forward to seeing the programme go from strength to strength in the future."

One in four people suffer from a mental health problem at any one time and mental ill health costs the economy over £77 billion a year, according to estimates. The Government is developing a new strategy for mental health for the coming years called New Horizons, currently out for consultation.

The Circulatory System and Yoga

Also known as the cardio-vascular system this consists of the heart (which pumps the blood to various body parts), and the blood vessels (which carry the blood from the heart and back to it again). The heart is a very vital organ which works incessantly from birth till death. It is divided into four compartments. The upper right compartment receives impure blood from all over the body, and sends it to the lower right one, from where it is sent for purification in the lungs. The purified blood from the lungs goes to the upper left compartment of the heart, and thence to the lower left one, from where it is pumped all over the body, through the arteries. The arteries are thickwalled tube-like structures which carry blood from the heart to various body-parts, through their branches and minute sub-branches. These minute sub-branches divide further into capillaries which are very thin-walled. The capillaries ramify into various muscles, organs, and tissues. Due to the thinness of their walls, the capillaries allow the nutrients and oxygen in the blood to come out of them, and be supplied to the tissues. In return, the carbon dioxide and other waste materials from the tissues diffuse into the capillaries. Minute sub-branches of veins start from where the capillaries end, and blood (with the waste materials in it) proceeds through the veins, and is ultimately returned to the heart. The veins are thin-walled. They have to raise the blood from the lower extremities, pelvic region. trunk, and abdomen against the force of gravity. This is achieved with the help of valves situated in the veins.

The blood contains nearly 90% water, in which three kinds of bodies keep floating. These are: the red blood corpuscles, the white blood cells, and the blood platelets. The R.B.C.s contain a scarlet coloured substance called "haemoglobin", which is the carrier of oxygen. The W.B.C.s constitute the defence force in the body. They fight any foreign cells such as bacteria and other micro-organisms which, if allowed to infest the body, can cause many diseases. The blood platelets are supposed to play an important role in the coagulation of blood, when it comes out of the blood vessels due to cuts and wounds. The circulatory system is thus responsible for carrying out three main functions in the body, namely, supplying nutrients to various parts and collecting waste materials from them, maintaining the body temperature at the normal level, and supplying oxygen to every part and collecting carbon dioxide. In this last function it works in co-operation with the respiratory system.

The Respiratory System and Yoga

This may be said to start from the nose, and is composed of the larynx, the wind pipe (trachea), its two branches (called "bronchi"), and the lungs. It is concerned with the vital function of making available the much needed oxygen to the body. It would be well to understand here why we need oxygen so badly for remaining alive. Our life activity is ever based on biochemical processes which cannot go on without a continuous supply of energy. This energy is received from the food we eat, especially the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The end roducts of these constituents are supplied to each tissue by the blood. The energy stored in these products can be released for the purpose of life activity of any tissue, only through the process of oxidation. This is a process in which oxygen combines with the substance containing energy, and releases energy along with water vapour and carbon dioxide. This process has to go on continually in every living tissue of the body, and it is, therefore that we can not live without oxygen for more than a few minutes. The carbon dioxide produced in the process of oxidation is a poisonous gas, and must be removed from the body as quickly as possible. It is collected, as we have noted earlier, in the blood flowing in the capillaries. We shall now see how it is eliminated from the body through the respiratory system.

Air from the atmosphere enters our body through the nose, and goes to the larynx or the sound box, and then to the wind pipe. The wind pipe further divides into two branches, one of which goes to the left lung, and the other to the right lung. They give rise to further branches and sub-branches in the lungs. At the ends of the minute sub-branches are borne the air sacks or cells (alveoli) which are surrounded by capillaries, through which the blood flows from the heart to the lungs, and back again to the heart. The walls of the air sacks are very thin. They allow gases to pass through in both directions. The oxygen from the air sacks is absorbed in the blood in the capi11aries, and the carbon dioxide and water vapour from the capillaries enters the air sacks. This gaseous exchange is a very important phenomenon concerning the respiratory system.

The lungs are made of elastic tissues which expand and contract during respiration. They are contained in what is called the "thoracic cavity" which is pro­tected on all sides by the ribs. The base of this cavity is made by a dome shaped band of a muscle cal1ed the "diaphragm", which plays an important role in the mechanism of respiration. The cavity below the diaphragm is called the "abdominal cavity". The cavity accommodates organs like the stomach, duodenum, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and intestines.

The act of respiration is composed of three parts, namely, inhalation, exhalation and pause. During inhalation the thoracic cavity increases in volume due to an elevation and extension of the ribs, along with a descent of the diaphragm downward. The lungs expand due to this, and air rushes in through the nose to fill the vacuum created thereby. The lungs then contract automatically after a while, due to their elastic recoil, expelling some amount of air during exhalation. This is foHowed by a state of pause, and then another round of inhalation and exhalation takes place. Car-bon dioxide and water vapour are got rid of through exhalation.

Yoga continues to interconnect itself within every culture, no matter how many outrageous claims are made against it. Anyone of any religious background, or political affiliation, can practice Yoga because it peacefully crosses all boundaries.

Now, let's look at prosperity. Is prosperity selfish? Prosperity is good fortune. Therefore, it is not always tangible. Prosperity could be many things, but we commonly think of it as wealth, success, or the good fortune of having a loving family.

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is the antioxidant capability or strength of food. The method of measurement was developed by the National Institute of Aging in Maryland. Since then, it has become a very popular for rating antioxidant supplements.

Fresh fruits generally score between 500 and 900 ORAC units per 100 grams.

The United States Department of Agriculture published an updated list of the ORAC scores of over 100 common foods, including fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, seeds, grains and so on, in 2004.

The scores were reported as micromoles of Trolex equivalents (TE, which is a vitamin E derivative) per gram both for lipid soluble, or lipiphilic, and water soluble, hydrophilic, antioxidants in foods. These scores were thus a measure of the total ORAC in the individual foods. This method was widely considered to be more accurate than the previously documented one because lipophilic values were included.

Studies have shown that all plants contain various amounts of both lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidant phytochemicals.

ORAC scores range from 140 TE per 100 grams for the watermelon to 1800 TE per 100 grams for the orange. For vegetables, scores lay between those obtained by the cucumber (115 TE) and the red kidney bean (14400). The nuts ranged between 2000 TE (cashew) and 17940 (pecan). Dried fruits had scores between 3037 (raisin) to 8578 (prune).

Spices such as clove and cinnamon had the highest ORAC values, at over 250,000 TE per 100 grams.

Commonly eaten foods scored as follows:
  • apple (4275 TE per 100 grams);
  • white potato (under 1100 TE per 100 grams);
  • peanut (3166 TE per 100 grams); and
  • tomato (400 TE per 100 grams).
Cocoa has a high value, giving dark chocolate a score of 13120 TE and white chocolate a score of 6740 TE per 100 grams.

In the Discovery of the Ultimate Superfood book, Young, Lawrence and Schreuder report the ORAC value of dried wolfberry as 30,300. This value is surpassed only by unverified marketing claims that acai contains 34,000 TE per 100 grams. There is an increasing trend for health food companies to use ORAC values in their marketing, although it is not certain that concentrated antioxidants are absorbed as easily by the body as antioxidants found in natural foods.
